MY
STORY
When
going through
chiropractic school 16
years ago, one of my
nutrition classes was
taught by a man who had
been a clinical
nutritionist for decades
and had started his own
nutritional supplement
company. He was very
knowledgeable and I
later found in practice
that he really knew what
he was talking about ( I
can’t say that about
every professor I’ve
ever had). For instance,
long preceding the media
recognition of
“The Zone
Diet” and Atkins he
was advocating more and
better quality protein
and better quality fats.
His view was that
people were getting too
many high glycemic index
carbs compared to the
amount of protein and
high quality fats. This
was during a time when
most mainstream doctors
were recommending high
carb/low protein diets.
In fact in many of his
views he was far ahead
of the general thinking
of the time. One thing
he emphasized was that
magnesium is much more
important than is
generally recognized by
the media or general
public. He was the first
person I had every heard
mention that calcium
will block the
absorption of magnesium,
including very calcium
rich foods like dairy
products. I filed this
information away but was
not quite sure how to
use it in practice.
Later
in practice I found that
many patients that were
having trouble sleeping
would also display some
signs of magnesium
deficiency. There are
numerous symptoms that
can be associated with
magnesium deficiency but
the ones I would look
for then were an unusual
amount of generalized
muscle tension and
inability to relax. I
would also look for
“tics” (small
persistent twitching of
muscles, especially
around the eyes), which
indicate more severe
magnesium deficiency.
Long-term magnesium
deficiency often shows
up as foot odor,
especially if combined
with too much
consumption of dairy
products. I used all the
different magnesium
products I could find
with varying success.
The best products for
sleeping that I found
were some of the liquid
Cal-Mag type products.
One in particular with
was acidified to help
with absorption was the
most effective. There
were two persistent
problems, however. One
was that it was
difficult with any
magnesium product to
take enough to get good
results, especially with
sleeping problems,
without getting
diarrhea. The other was
that even the best
products seemed to stop
working very well after
a while. According to
most of the nutritional
information I was
getting, even from
otherwise excellent
nutritional companies,
was that the “usual”
way of supplementing
magnesium was entirely
sufficient and those
symptoms I was seeing
were due to something
else. I knew from my
observations in practice
and from that old
professor that this just
wasn’t true. I still
had not been able to
find the solution
though.
When
I first opened and read
advertisement for
Natural Calm I literally
rushed back into my
office, picked up the
phone and ordered
several bottles. If this
product was what it
seemed to be, it was
exactly what I had been
looking for. I had been
struggling with sleeping
problems myself, so I
was the perfect guinea
pig. When I received the
Natural Calm a few days
later I tried it myself
immediately. To my
astonishment, about
twenty minutes after I
took it I felt a mild
but distinct feeling of
relaxation coming over
me. I can still remember
where I was standing in
my patient waiting room
when I noticed the
effect. That night I
went to sleep far more
easily than usual and
woke up with no effects
other than feeling a
little mellower. The
next night was the same
and the night after. I
was extremely impressed
especially since I had
no laxative effect at
all. I decided to follow
the recommendation to
slowly increase the
dosage until I started
getting a laxative
effect and back down
from there. This was not
difficult and soon it
was easy to judge
exactly the look of the
heaping teaspoon that
was the right amount for
me. I kept waiting for
the same effect of not
working as well as I had
experienced with other
Cal-Mag products pretty
quickly. Weeks went by
and this did not occur.
I later figured out that
this was because this
was only magnesium and I
had been out of balance
with calcium and
magnesium for a long
time. The other products
had quickly reached a
point where the fairly
easily absorbed calcium
was blocking a lot of
the magnesium absorption
and calcium and
magnesium were still out
of balance. Taking more
of the Cal-Mag product
just made this worse.
The reason I could get
such good effects from
the Natural Calm is
because it is so easily
absorbed and it is just
magnesium. Unabsorbed
magnesium acts as a
laxative once it hits
the colon. That’s the
reason Epsom salts
(magnesium sulfate) or
liquid magnesium citrate
formulas are sold as
laxatives. Most of these
hard to absorb forms of
magnesium pass on into
the colon and have a
laxative effect. Natural
Calm is absorbed so much
more easily that it can
supply sufficient
magnesium to the system
without causing any
laxative effect unless
you take more than body
wants to absorb.
I
started using Natural
Calm with some selected
patients and the
feedback was incredible.
They were finally
sleeping well and felt
more relaxed overall. I
noticed that the extreme
muscle tension that some
patients exhibited,
quickly improved with
Natural Calm. This made
them easier to adjust
and they held their
adjustments better. I
personally noticed that
I did not get nearly as
aggravated in heavy
traffic as I used to.
The more I used the
product with my patients
the more I realized that
unrecognized magnesium
deficiency was at the
root of many conditions.
I don’t mean to say it
is the only important
deficiency of course,
but it importance is
vastly more than most
people realize. I also
saw that the media and
medical push for calcium
supplementation was
creating or worsening
magnesium deficiency in
many people. The media
has so hyped calcium
that many patients were
afraid to not take their
calcium for even a
couple of days so they
could try the Natural
Calm properly. It takes
an ongoing education
effort and coaxing to
keep introducing Natural
Calm to patients, but
once I do they almost
all get very good
results. I hope I get
across the points I am
trying to make about
this on this website. I
realize that what I am
saying goes against what
you are hearing about
calcium in the media
right now. To a rational
person it seems that if
magnesium deficiency
were really a problem
you would hear about it
more. It also seems that
if calcium supplements
could cause this problem
you would have heard
about that also.
The
way the media picks up
on things is strange and
there is much more bias
towards certain ways of
thinking even among
doctors, medical
researchers and
nutritionists than you
would think. The fact
that calcium blocks
magnesium absorption is
well known and has been
for a long time. There
is research that shows
that magnesium
deficiency is a major
problem in this country
but it has just never
been picked up as
important by the media
or much of the
nutritional community. I
think this is partly
because there has never
been a magnesium product
that was so easily
absorbed before. I had
already realized that
magnesium was a major
problem but most people
had not, so they were
not looking for a
product like this as I
was. You can help people
with insomnia to some
extent even with
ordinary magnesium
supplements and it’s
certainly better than
nothing. Most clinicians
have just assumed that
this was sufficient, or
at least as good as it
gets. It’s not!
The
easiest way to
“research” this
product is to simply try
it. This is not one of
those supplements that
you think you
“should” take but
can’t see much
difference in the way
you feel when you do.
The effects of Natural
Calm should be easily
apparent to anyone who
needs it. The signs I
used to look for to
indicate magnesium
deficiency are really
signs of fairly severe
magnesium deficiency. I
have found that the
most common sign of
magnesium deficiency is
actually insomnia!
Note:
Magnesium and
Depression: There is
a site dedicated to
magnesium and it’s
relation to depression.
It is a pretty militant
site, especially about
the way calcium is
pushed in the media. I
have been pretty
skeptical of some of the
claims there but I have
to say I do have one
patient who seems to
have become much less
depressed by taking
Natural Calm. She had
become depressed after
some major traumatic
incidents in her life
and medically prescribed
antidepressants were
only helping a little.
She also had some other
symptoms of magnesium
deficiency so I had her
try the Natural Calm. It
seemed to have and
immediate positive
effect on her depression
as well as helping her
sleep. A few weeks later
she seems happier than
I’ve ever know her. I
don’t know exactly how
much is due to the
Natural Calm but it
certainly did seem to be
a factor.
